Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, now in its 70 th year. was founded on May 18, 1933 by most reverend Hainpitigedara Ghannaseeha  thero, in temperant, Constructed cadjan hut on a plot of land named ''Pattiya gedara'' located in Mudduwa Thomson road. This is how most revernd Henpitigedara Ghannseeha there explains the beginning of the School in his book (page 57) "Getting Flood Proof land is not easy. Therefore, I temporarily started a girl's college in the temporary buildings built on the land, calms pattiya Gedara Whatta Located on a hill on the side of the road which is now called Mudduwa mawatha, not for from our pirverena" The building were constructed at that time with the aid received from Our pirivena''. On 13/05/1952, this Sumana Balika Vidyalaya was started under the leadership of professor Gunapala Malalasekara Six female teachers were paid for Several years.

At the beginning 18 buddhist girls enrolled and follows. The number of female students gradually increased Started to as 60, and on 31 May 1955, Sumana Balika Vidyalaya was registered with the department of Education as a government aided school.

In the beginning of this college, many people worked as without getting any salary. To those teachers the present Sumana Balika Should be saluted. Some teachers were paid a small Salary. by Ghanaseoha thero during this period, even though it was government aided School, it was learned that all development. activities were carried out with the aid money, so an organization named Sumana Balika Vidyalaya old Society was established under the patronage of Ghanaseeha thero. The main role of this aid Society was the School which was temporarily held in a Coconut branch Shed, was moved to a permanent building and the college was improved by recruiting more female students from the area. As the frist step Step to be taken for that the administration of the School, Under the Chairmanship of Mr. Adikaram.

On January 18,1956 Sumana Balika Vidyalaya which was brought to Dhambawinna Walawwa was later moved to another suitable location in Rathnapura city due to problems related to that Walawwa. The 8 acres of land where Sumana Balika Vidyalaya currently stands on Gatangama road(then brownring road )Rathnapura was chosen as a suitable site for the college overcoming the obstacles to take over this land, the most reverned Henpitigedara Ghanaseeha thero perfectly managed to get this land and the frist building of the college was also built after the opening of the building in September 1956, the student dormitory facilities were also expanded.

In this School, which has a long history advanced classes have been started in 1959 In the arts Section and in 1979 in the science Section Sumana Balika which be a national School in 1992, also started bilingual Classes in 2004. Sumana Girls' College which has such a long history, was selected for the project of developing a thousand school in 2011 and in 2012 G.C.E O/L, A/L .The promotion of 14 AB as a Super School along with the initiation of the technology stream. is also a milestone that. leaves an indelible mark in the history of Sumana Balika. In 2016, the ministry of Education's nearest School become a School where the best school project is implemented. Thus it is evident from the efforts of parents to enroll their in this Children School that PI Sumana Balika Vidyalaya has become a very popular school developed in Rathnapura district.
